The Iridium constellation consists of 66
low-earth orbiting (LEO), cross-linked satellites

The World's First Global Handset
On December 12, 2000, Iridium Satellite LLC
announced that it had completed the acquisition of
the operating assets of Iridium LLC and its
subsidiaries. With the asset transfer complete,
Iridium Satellite LLC now owns all of the former
assets of Iridium LLC, including the satellite
constellation, the terrestrial network, Iridium real
property and intellectual property.
Iridium Satellite began service to the U.S.
Government in December, 2000. On March 28, 2001,
commercial satellite communications services were
launched to heavy industry and other government
customers. The marketing strategy will be to focus
on industrial clients whose operations require
reliable communications to and from remote areas of
the globe where terrestrial systems are not
available. The Iridium system has the unique ability
to reach all of the world's remote areas, including
the airspace, the oceans and the many
under-developed parts of the globe that currently
have no communications systems. Specifically, the
company will pursue industrial segments including
aviation, maritime, oil & gas, mining, heavy
construction, forestry, emergency services, and the
leisure market.
Iridium World Data Services were launched on June 4,
2001. This service includes Dial-Up Data with a
throughput rate of up to 2.4 Kbps and Direct
Internet Data with a throughput rate of up to 10
Kbps. Iridium Satellite LLC also plans to offer
specialty equipment for aviation and maritime
applications.
Iridium Satellite has contracted with the Boeing
Company to operate and maintain the satellite
constellation, and Celestica has agreed to provide
subscriber equipment.

The IRIDIUM system is a satellite-based Personal
Communication Services (PCS), or Mobile Satellite
Services (MSS) system, supporting global, wireless
digital communications. IRIDIUM provides voice,
messaging and data services to mobile subscribers
using handheld user terminals.
Iridium Satellite launched commercial global
satellite communications services on March 28, 2001
with enhanced products and services. Service
enhancements include improved voice quality and
simplified pricing plans. Soon after launch, Iridium
expanded the service portfolio to include data

Iridium Satellite has introduced a new range of
maritime satellite communication services providing
cost-effective solutions for ship owners to meet the
new International Maritime Organization (IMO)
requirements for Ship Security and Alert Systems (SSAS).
Short Burst Data
Iridium Short Burst Data (SBD) service is a new data
service that enables value-added applications to
send and receive short data transactions efficiently
over the Iridium network.
Short Message Service (SMS)
As an Iridium voice subscriber, your phone performs
double-duty as a voice communication and messaging
device. The Iridium Satellite phone can send and
receive up to 160 alphanumeric characters, in a
single message. Once you turn your phone on and
register with the Iridium satellite network, your
new messages will be sent directly to your handset.
Iridium Voice Services
If you work, live or travel in areas outside
cellular coverage or in areas with inadequate
landline service, Iridium is for you. Eighty-six
percent of the world's landmass and all of its
oceans are in areas with inadequate landline
service. Iridium addresses these situations by
providing coverage in all ocean areas, air routes
and all landmasses - even the Poles.
Iridium Global Paging Service
Only Iridium Global Paging Service offers global
paging and messaging services. Iridium Global Paging
Service uses the Iridium constellation of 66
satellites to enable subscribers to receive numeric
and alphanumeric paging virtually anywhere on the

Iridium Crew Calling
With a single SIM Card and a single Iridium phone,
vessels can now have both traditional subscription
service and prepaid service. Captain and officers
use their traditional subscription service as
required for ship's business while crewmembers can
place prepaid personal calls.

With Iridium prepaid services, users have a
cost-effective communications system at their
